CEREC

What is CEREC?

CEREC stands for Ceramic Reconstruction. It is a combination of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) that produces extremely high quality dental restorations at the chair side.

What does the procedure involve?

  1. The defective filling material and decay are removed and the cavity is reshaped for the new restoration. A reflective powder is applied and the tooth is ready for scanning.
  2. An optical 3D image is then taken with a small camera. The ceramic restoration is designed on the computer screen using the image data. The restoration is then automatically milled from a solid ceramic block, this is produced so precisely that it may be fitted and bonded to the prepared tooth during the same dental visit.
  3. After polishing and glazing the new restoration is fitted using a unique light and bonding material uniting the tooth and porcelain.

What are the benefits of CEREC?

  1. Protects and preserves the structural integrity of the tooth.
  2. Ceramics are biocompatible
  3. Can be completed in one visit.
  4. Perfect in appearance, quality and comfort.
  5. Long lasting and durable.

What is tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening is a safe, non invasive method of improving the shade of your teeth and is a well established procedure in cosmetic dentistry.
It is a bleaching process that lightens discolouration of enamel and dentine caused by the substances that may come into contact with your teeth everyday for example tea, coffee, red wine, cola and tobacco.

Is it safe?

Yes! Clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth with hydrogen peroxide under the supervision of a dental professional is safe for teeth and gums.

How does it work?

Hydrogen Peroxide is the active ingredient in tooth whitening solutions. As it is broken down the oxygen element enters the enamel and the dentine and bleaches the coloured substances. The tooth colour is made lighter whilst the structure of the tooth remains unchanged.

Methods of tooth whitening.

There are two options available at our practice;

  1. In office. Whereby the results are immediate. A concentrated tooth whitening solution is placed on the teeth, which is then activated by a blue light source (not UV). Guaranteed six to eight shades lighter in approximately an hour and a half.
  2. Out of office. Impressions are taken of your teeth and models are made. On the models custom made trays are fabricated. Then at home whitening solution is placed in the trays and they are worn for about an hour each day for approximately two weeks.

  2. If the tooth has large fillings.
  3. If the tooth is worn down.
  4. To improve appearance

What is a crown made of?

A crown is made of porcelain or a combination of porcelain and gold alloy.
Porcelain is extremely strong and can be made to match the colour of the surrounding natural teeth.
Porcelain is sometimes fused to a gold alloy base when it required to withstand forces, especially useful for molar teeth.
