What is a Crown? A crown is made to cover an existing natural tooth and replaces the part of the tooth seen above the gum line. Where a tooth is extremely worn or weakened a crown is an excellent way to rebuild the tooth back to its natural shape and strength.
When is a crown required?
- if the tooth has extensive decay
- if the tooth has large fillings
- if the tooth is worn down
- to improve appearance
- to maintain a natural bite
- to restore function
What is a crown made of? A crown is made of ceramic material (porcelain or alumina disilicate) which maybe fused to a very strong zirconia or gold alloy substructure. In this way the crown is extremely strong and can be made to match the colour of the surrounding natural teeth.
