Dental Hygiene

The Dental Hygienist is an extremely important member of Dr Fleming's dental team.

The role of the Hygienist is the detection, treatment and prevention of dental disease - in particular, periodontal (gum) disease. Periodontal disease is rapidly becoming one of the most common causes of tooth loss in the western world and has recently been linked to other diseases such as coronary heart disease. Early detection of gum disease is also essential to prevent potential tooth loss and the breakdown of existing dental work. For these reasons a thorough periodontal screening is carried out at each dental hygiene visit.

During your visit, your dental hygienist will evaluate the health of your gums and discuss with you the preventative measures that may be taken to achieve and then maintain good dental and periodontal health. The Hygienist will then clean and polish your teeth and apply solutions to prevent decay. Then they will show you the oral hygiene techniques required on a daily basis to maintain your teeth in a healthy and disease-free state. X rays may also be taken for diagnostic purposes.

Regular visits with our Hygienists will be recommended to maintain good oral and periodontal health. The frequency of these appointments will depend on your individual circumstances and specific periodontal and dental needs.
