What is teeth whitening? Teeth whitening is a safe, non invasive method of improving the colour of your teeth and is a well established procedure in cosmetic dentistry.
It is a bleaching process that lightens discolouration of enamel and dentine, caused by the substances that may come into contact with your teeth everyday. eg: tea, coffee, red wine, cola and tobacco.
Is it safe? Clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth with hydrogen peroxide under the supervision of a dental professional is safe for teeth and gums.
How does it work? Hydrogen Peroxide is the active ingredient in tooth whitening solutions. The oxygen element of Hydrogen Peroxide enters the enamel and the dentine, and bleaches the coloured substances. The tooth colour is made lighter whilst the structure of the tooth remains unchanged.
Methods of teeth whitening:

- There are two options available at our practice; In clinic. Whereby the results are immediate. A concentrated teeth whitening solution is placed on the teeth, which is then activated by a blue light source (not UV). Guaranteed six to eight shades lighter in approximately one and a half hours.
- Out of clinic. Impressions are taken of your teeth and models are made. Custom made trays are fabricated on the models. Then at home, whitening solution is placed in the trays and they are worn for about an hour each day for approximately two weeks.
